Miss America–Days Two and Three (Wednesday and Thursday)
WARNING: This will be an exceptionally long, but well-worth the read post!
WEDNESDAY: The teens started off with an early rehearsal, working on our fitness and dance routine which would be part of Prelim Night Two’s entertainment during the show. Of course, the teens were totally on it! We spent a lot of time talking and being silly (especially because Staci from NE joined us on Wednesday!). We then moved to the theatre, to rehearse on stage. Thank you to fate, because Pauli was sitting in the auditorium, having done her talent rehearsal earlier! I was able to give her a huge hug and talk about her upcoming talent performance that night. The teens finished rehearsal, and had a few hours to waste before the show.
With some time to spare, Courtney (VA), Staci (NE), Mary Katherine (FL) my mom and I went on the town—the Las Vegas strip baby. I was completely taken by the incredible sights of the massive buildings, blinding lights, the impersonators (We saw at least 3 Elvises, but we thought this one was the best!). I was very glad my mom accompanied us, because we got so many offers to come to clubs, even though we are all significantly under the age of 21. The strip was beautiful and inspiring, (ignoring the the men on street corners.) The very best part of the evening came when we saw the fountain show at the Belagio–I was mesmerized by the rising and falling water to “Time to Say Goodbye.” The four of us really bonded during the beautiful show, and we were so full of “warm fuzzies,” ready to perform at the Prelim Show.
Prelim Night 2 was excellent. Pauli sang “I Know Where I’ve Been” the absolute best I have ever heard her sing her talent song. I was so proud of her and how much she gave of herself through her performance. The teens missed the swimsuit portion, as we got ready for our performance. We introduced ourselves, and we worked the Miss America stage just as hard as the Miss contestants! It was a blast to be up there with 40 other talented and wonderful girls. During awards, a Miracle child, Drew, from the Childrens’ Miracle Network Hospitals came on stage, and was hilarious and so sweet; I am again reminded of the incredible impact the Miss America Organization has on so many people. The Prelim Night ended with Alabama winning swimsuit and Rhode Island won Talent. Congrats to those ladies, and to Pauli for her talent presentation. After visitation, where Pauli looked great, I enjoyed dinner with Bill, Becky, Cathy, and my mom; we were the last ones in P.F. Changs!
THURDSAY: The teens had a great outing day, thanks to Miss NV OTeen, Angela Foremaster! We first went to the Mirage to pet dolphins! Dolphins are so fascinating and sweet; I can now cross that off my To-Do List! My dear friends helped me as I had a wardrobe malfunction where my skinny jeans got stuck up under my knees–I was so touched by their willingness to help me. I so love these girls. We also got to see some great animals, like lions and tigers (no bears, oh my)!We then went to a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital, where we were educated on where our fundraising dollars go and the importance of excellent child medical care. Working with CMN Hospitals allows me to touch a child’s life in a way that will give them the gift of health. I am honored to be involved in this process. We also took pictures at the Las Vegas sign, and goofed around!
We returned, and I took a much needed nap. Time for the final Prelim Night! Pauli tonight competed in On Stage question, and of course she totally rocked it; she has such passion and eloquence to communicate. I am continually inspired by Pauli’s committment to youth and her hard work in preparation for Miss America. I was extremely proud of her. The audience then enjoyed a special presentation of Miss America 1961 Nancy Flemming and some Miss America pop culture references. This organization is so incredible, and being here has only solidified my love for this program. Prelim Night 3 ended awarding Miss Oklahoma the swimsuit award and Miss Nebraska the talent award (You go girl–only 17 years old!!!)
I am running out of time, and there will be much to talk about later! Congrats to all of you read this entire post!
